Printing from Calamus with an Intel MacBook

Printing from Calamus with an Intel MacBook

I have not been able to get Calamus SL to print on an Intel MacBook (2.16HGz Intel Core 2 Duo) running Tiger 10.4.11.

I have been using Calamus SL on an old PowerPC G3 iMac with Tiger (currently the same 10.4.11 as the MacBook) and MagicMacX 1.2.0 for years without any problems. I copied the whole MagicMacX directory structure (which includes Calamus in it) from the G3 to the Intel MacBook.

Calamus runs without any problem until I try to print something. The first attempt at printing a page will sometimes work, but Calamus is obviously in distress because it often doesn't re-write the screen to completely remove the Mac printing progress bar and the Calamus info pane. The second attempt at printing a page usually crashes Calamus and MagicMacX. If it survives the second attempt, the third print always crashes it.

In the crash logs, the Console.log reports malloc errors and "no autorelease pool" errors that seem to be caused within Calamus.icc. There is a large crash log written to MagicMacX.crash.log.

I wanted to attach the crash logs to this post, but I can't see how to do it.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing this, and is there a way to fix it?

Regards,
Trevor Thompson

Hi,
that is a very nasty bug in the printing system of Calamus/MagicMacX. There is a conflict with the twin processors and double core processors. There is one solution: disable one core (or processor, in my case).
This is done with the application CHUD, which can be found on the utility-disk of folder which came with your Mac. It installs a preference pane in your system preferences and in my case I have an item menubar. I disable one processor, print what I want and turn it back on.
If you can't find this little program (perhaps on the Apple-site), perhaps there is another program (like Onyx) that can turn cores or processors off and on.

If you can't find anything, I can mail you a link to my disk image (it is 35 Mb, too large to mail).

Or, you can export everything to PDF with Bridge, but be aware of transparancies and color conversions. Printing with PDF Print also crashes like 'real' printing.

Good luck! It works for me.

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your fast response to my question.
I have located CHUD. It will be a couple of days before I can try it, but I will let you know how it goes for me.
Thanks again,
Trevor
