When printing from Calamus in MagicMac, where make the printer settings?

Posted by Jonas Möller Nielsen
When I print from Calamus within MagicMac X I do not know where I should change the printer settings. I can make dither settings in Calamus as well as in Mac OSX and so on. Where is the right place to make set the printer settings?

Also, I have problems when printing. I have a vector image pantone coolgrey 4. But it comes out striped! When I change the printer settings in MacOSX to photo, the vector image becomes a bit better but the text get a bit unclear in the edges.

Any suggestions on how printing within Calamus and MagicMac is best done?

Hi Jonas.

Please keep in mind that Calamus is a SoftRIP. This indicates that all page informations from your document will be RIPed in the way you define it in the Calamus print dialog (b&w versus color, print resolution, color separation and stuff ...).

Then the somehow RIPed printing rectangle will be sent by MacPrint to the Mac OS. The OS afterwards handles the data over to the printer driver which kind of treats it according to the printer driver settings. Then the final print data are spooled to your printing machine.

Thus - you decide what to do.

First I have to admit, I am not a professional when it comes to printing and such. All I want is the output to be the same wheter I print from my Hades or on my Mac. Unfortunately, at the moment, I can stil not manage to switch of the Mac printing routines. I have tried all kinds of combinations. Either the text becomes fussy in the edges (normal black text) or the vector graphics get all strange.

It seems that to get a clear and sharp output, I stil have to use my Hades! Amazing that a 10 year old computer prints better than an almost brand new Macintosh!

Does anyone have any suggestions how I switch OFF the Mac printing routines? I just whant the page to be sent directly from Calamus to the printer without changes in between.

Hi Jonas.

Please keep in mind, that you definitely use different printer drivers at the moment. On your Hades, you obviously use an appropriate Calamus printer driver for your printer. On your Mac, you will probably use MacPrint plus the native MacOS printer driver which is working in correspondance with MacPrint.

Thus, you would have to make sure that you can access your printer with the same appropriate Calamus printer driver on your mac. Therefore, the printer will have to be accessed in parallel mode - but on modern Mac machines, there is no such port.

I have now installed another printer than before, a HP LaserJet 1200 instead of a HP LaserJet 6L, and now the printing works fine! I have not a clue why, but it works know, which is good.
