Soft transition from photo to a white frame
21 years ago
I have a photo and in the middle I would like to put a white frame where I should put some text and images. (I would like a completely white background.) But I would like the edges to be softened a bit, so the transition from the photo to the white frame is smoothe. How can I acomplish this?

I have been trying out the filter module a bit but I am not sure if this is the ideal way. It seems a bit tricky and involves many steps, frames etc. I have looked a little bit at the merge module but I could not find any desciption in the manual of how it works. Maybe the merge module is not suitable for this anyway. Or?

Hello Jonas,

On top of the photo, you could make a raster-frame with a big black border (10 mm or so), convert it to bitmap. Then invert it with Franklin. Soften it with the Filter-module and use Merge to 'merge' it with the photo. After playing around with the + and -, and the front (vorne) and behind (hinten) buttons you should be able to make what you want. I can send you more info or a document if you wish...
Remember, the Merge and Mask-modules work opposite, in that with Mask, the black part is kept and in the Merge module the black part of the mask is blocked from the result.

Succes,

Thank's a lot. It actually works and was quite easy as well. This was my first time using the Merge-module. I stil do not understand even half of all the settings in this module, but the defaults seemed to work alright. I guess there are some documentation somwhere, I just have to find out WHERE!

To our blame be it spoken that there is no English Merge documentation available already (and the German one is only available in printed "adequate systems" mode").

I hope and be able to translate and publish the Merge manual in the near future.
