Aligning lines in columns

Aligning lines in columns

I never seem to get it right in Calamus - aligning textlines in multiple columns. Something that is so easy in other programs seems to be very difficult in Calamus! This is my problem:

Text style: Body
Text size: Versal 2.5 mm
Text ruler: Body
Line spacing mode: Versal height + line spacing (the one most to the left)
Line space: 1.1 mm
Paragraph space: ? (I can not figure it out!)

Text style: Body bold
Text size: Versal 2.5
Text ruler: Description
Line spacing mode: Versal height + line spacing
Line space: 1.1 mm
Paragraph space: 1.1

I have one text in the left column with text style Body bold + ruler Description. In the right column I have a text with style Body + ruler Body.

The first lines are aligned perfectly! But as soon as I change paragraph in the right column (with the Body + Body) the text lines are no longer aligned.

How shall I calculate the Paragraph spacing for the rulers to get it right?

I have managed this before in Calamus, but everytime it has seemed to be more of on accident than clever work.

Hi Jonas.

Whenever you want to align textlines in multiple paragraphs, please use the text ruler type "Baselines snap to line raster" like described in the manual under [www.calamus.net] (or click HERE.

Of course both line and paragraph spacings should be set to the same value then. Keep in mind that this ruler type only works fine when the frames start at the same Y position.

Very smart. But I think there is something I have not gotten or maybe I miss a module!

I have several frames on differet pages. When I have set the ruler and the grid lines (with the standard grid-lines module) so that the text in the two frames that I want aligned, is aligned correctly and the line spacing is what I want, then the line spacing in other frames and on other pages are completely different! Even though I have used the same Ruler and Text style!

Is there something going on here with the grid lines module, do I maybe need the more advanced grid lines module?

When you want to use "line raster", you will have to use it in ALL text frames which should have it. (Of course, marginals and titles should be placed in separate text frames then.)

There is no "more advanced" grid lines module for this purpose. smiling smiley It all depends on your settings in the TEXT module. The grid help lines do not have any effect on text base lines in Calamus.

Maybe it would be a good idea to even take a look at the text ruler list management.

This powerful list helps you keeping control over your used text rulers throughout the whole document.

I have sorted it out with the text aligning. I did not use the "snap" function (which I stil can´t figure out to get right), but instead I used the middle option with where I set at total line height/size. With the frames top aligned the text then was line aligned as well.

But please tell me what I have missed or done wrong with the "snap to grid line"-function because it sound interesting and easy!

The "middle" option of the text rulers (called "Absolute line spacing") works almost like you want it, but it will cause "problems" when a font in the first line of a text frame has a size larger than the text line spacing.

Therefore, we implemented the "right" option of the text rulers, called "Baselines snap to line raster".
