Problem with printing w/Calamus SL under Magic
17 years ago
I have setup a file that allows me to print my Christmas labels using Calamus SL.
It works great except when I print the labels under Magic, I get about 7-8 nastyread lines through some of them. However, when I print them under TOS or Geneva, things are fine. I am using the VDIPrint driver so I can use printer drivers from NVDI. I also run MagicNet. I tried this before and it worked fine, but not now and I have not as yet found out why this is happening. Anyone have an idea? Last yearit worked fine, but that was under Calamus 2000. Maybe the upgrade had somethingto do with it.

What do you mean with "7-8 nasty read lines"? Could you describe this more detailled or fax me a sample?

Just as I said. Nasty red lines going the whole length of the page. Actually I look closer there are 14 lines (7 places on the page with two lines closetogether). The strange thing is that if I load in a new file file, leave itblank and print it, I still get these lines. I will try it again and see whathappens. If I get the lines again, I will scan the page and email it to you.

I don't know how relevant this is, I rarely run Calamus under MagiC. However from time to time when I Stochastiocally screen an image the printed result has the same lines you mention. I reboot the computer and the problem goes away.

I again experienced the same printing problem involving the red lines, but I
found out why it happens. It seems when I use the VDIprint module and have
the minimum amount of memory that Calamus leaves my system (Hades computer)
set to anything above 4meg, I get the red lines. I get no red lines when the
minimum system memory is set to 4meg or less (in system parameter module).
This means that I cannot use the virtual memory when printing. It seems to
me that the problem lies in the VDIprint module.
On my beigh G3 I can't seen to print anything from Calamus.
The MacPrint.CDT gives me an error, saying that it needs a MAC computer. The MacPrintX.CDT says, "MacPrintX kann mit dieser version von magicmacx leider micht arbeiten. And the MACPRNX.CDT says the same thing. The MacXPrint.CDT gives me an error... File not found.

I tried this on my G4 at work, and MacXPrint.CDT works Fine.

please help!

Well a little more expermenting and I found that the MacPrintX.cdt won't show up in magicCmac, because it is 9.3 instead of 8.3 characters in the file name. I fixed that and re installed SL2003. The english version of the error message now appears, and says...
"Unknown MagiCmac version."

So what should I be using to launch MagicmMacX?

I have version 1.1.
Should I use MagicMacX, or MagicMacX Degug OSX?
Ok, this is the last time, for tonight...maybe.

I then proceeded to upgrade SL2003 to version 2.

MacPrintX.CDT,(which I changed to MACPRINX.CDT),gives the error...
Unknown MagiCMac version.

The MagicXprint.CDT that was with the SL2003 v2 upgrade, gives the error,"Driver Not Licensed".

This is when I launch MMX, with MaciCMacX.

When I launch MMX with the MagiCMac degug OSX, the MACPRINX.CDT loads and appears to work until you hit the print button. An error message comes up saying"The Number of Document pages needs to be a multiple of 2".

I can't change the number of pages, especially since it's a one page document.

The MagicXprint.CDT, still shows the Driver not Licensed, error.

Hi Steve.

Using MMX, please delete MacPrint.CDT and MacXPrint.CDT. Only keep MacPrintX.CDT (and rename it, if you like to).

As far as I can see, there is no need to shorten the printer driver name to something with 8+3 characters only.

Please keep in mind that the MacOS lib files have to be put into the MagiCMac folder. Maybe you forgot these file from the mmx_libs.dmg.gz archive on your beige G3 mac.

Ulf,

Yes I do have the MacOS lib files in the MagiCMac folder.
I deleted the CDT files you suggested, and launched MagiCMacX.
I ran Calamus SL 2003 v2, loaded the FIX_KEYS.CDK, and went to the print menu, loaded the MacPrintX.cdt, and an error message appeared...Unknown MagiCMac Version.

Damn...

Which version of MagiCMac X do you run? Maybe ...

Ok, After starting all over, and reinstalling everything, running MagiCMac 1.1, with all the new MMX lib files and the MacprintX.cdt and SL2003 v2, when I go to print the prind drives loads alright, however, when I hit the print button, I get the error message, The number of document pages must be a multiple of 2.

So as a test I added a page to a 1 page doc., and the CDK began to print.

HURRAY!!! success...almost.

No matter what I do to change the print settings, the page prints sideways. I have it set to portrait, and calamus shows the cdk as portrait, but it prints landscape.

I just like to mention that I don't have this problem on my G4 at work. Also...
SL2002v4 on this G3 prints just fine.

Steve, please switch off the checkbox in front of the "Mount" button in the Print dialog. It seems as if the Imposition lite (or PRO) module wants to fool you.

Hi Steve

Sleightly off topic. I upgraded to Panther and Panther will not work with any of the GIMP print drivers. They work fine with Jaguar, just about any version, but will not work with Panther - Whether Calamus or Photoshop.

As far as I have read, Apple switched to CUPS since Panther. Maybe you will have to install new stuff for printer drivers.

Hi Ulf

Well this is a sort of amusing story. Apple actually provides GIMP 4.6 with Panther - Yet it wont drive the Epson 3000. I called Apple about this. The technician first told me that Apple never heard of the 3000. He then told me that the problem is with GIMP Print. Since I use GIMP print without a problem with Jaguar this didn't make sense to me.Finally, the technician told me that Panther will not drive the 3000 and I should call Epson.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I've been using, without a problem, the new OSX driver for the 3000 from Epson. But this driver will not print out Stochastically Screened images - Only GIMP will do that.

To make a long story even longer, I then went to Source Forge and THEY tell me that the problem is with Panther and that they are actually working with Apple to fix it.

So much for Apple technical support.

We could blame it to the US government, could we? ;-))

Who knows? Is Panther a WMD?

Probably the best way to get the bugs out is to accuse Apple of hiding WMD's inside the OS.
