Printing with MagiCMac

Printing with MagiCMac
I'm having trouble printing via MagiCMac. If I choose the option "synchronious" the resulting printout is VERY slow. If I choose 234K (which my printer the Epson 3000 can handle) the machine locks up. In the Calamus Print dialogue I have chosen "other.
" This printer is capable of high speed output, but I can't seem to access it with MagiCMac (version 6.xx).

My other question is, that when I use the Mac VDI print I can print out quite well but I can't properly print out Stochastically screened images. Is there a way to completely overide the Epson options and printout just as the Epson driver for Calamus would have printed.?

Do you use the MacPrint printer driver from Calamus SL99? Do you own it?

If not ... it is part of the SL2000 package! Do not buy it for SL99 any more.

Hello Ulf Yes I purchased the printer driver when I purchased SL 99. There is nothing wrong with the driver, except that it's in German.
In the description it implies that I can overide the options in the actual Mac driver, in this case the Epson 3000. I can find no way to overide these options and therefore no way to print stochastically screened images from the Star Screening Module.

What color depth do you select in the Calamus Print Dialog form when printing your Calamus document pages via MacPrint to your EPSON3000?

I choose the CYMK option. I've also tried the 216 color option. The best results are from CYMK, on the Epson side I choose 1440 - I know this is odd but the results are much worse if I choose 720 on the Epson side. With the CYMK option the picture prints out looking more or less as if I was using the Calamus driver - BUT VERY, VERY grainy, while if I use the Calamus driver the resulting printout is very smooth, very much like a photograph.

I suggest you better try RGB or 216c modes, as these two modes do not use the Calamus screen rules but send a color bitmap of your page size to the MacOS EPSON printer driver. The MacOS driver should be able and produce a smooth output then (in photograph quality) using its embedded FM raster method.

Please check that there is enough RAM on the MacOS partition where the MacOS printer drivers spool their files.

Maybe you will have to enlarge the amount of RAM which MagiCMac uses in the MacOS system. Therefore do not change the MagiCMac memory settings, but select the MagiCMac program icon and call "Info" from the MacOS menu. Enlarge the RAM for MagiCMac there.

Hope it helps.

Raster Generator

Hi I used to be able to set the dot configuration in the Raster Generator to 0 and then have the resulting image, in this case an 8 bit grayscale, print out as "lines." Now when I make this setting nothing happens. If I zoom in with the colors set properly in the color/gray module I can see that the image is in lines, but it prints out as dots.

Hi David.

Did you understand the mechanism of the "new" SL99 Raster Generator? You can switch off generating of raster dots and have Ordered Dithering instead. Maybe you did not switch on the rasterization?

Please check this ...

There are two options;

1. Always use ordered dither - I use this option when I want ordered dither.

2. Use ordered dither above xxx dpi.

I always use this option and type in the number 1000. I assume that since the number 1000 is higher then what my printer can do, then the printer will use the raster screens.?.?

For a while I was unable to post here and wrote directly to Ulf - He replied that the option where you select the dpi should be UNDER the dpi of the printer not over as I was doing.
In other words, my printer was 720 and I was typing in 1000. I should have typed in a number UNDER 720, like 710 or 200 or something. I did this and now the problem is over
